Undisturbed feeding at the trough is essential for dairy herds.Good feed intake is a prerequisite for production, and the Zen'eat offers an appropriate solution. Simple yet highly effective, this system improves feed intake in a number of ways.

What's the concept? The Zen'eat is a raised, slightly inclined separation of the feed zone, coupled with flexible separators. The gaiter is installed along the fence. Concrete floors in traffic corridors, often damp and slippery, are an ideal breeding ground for the bacteria responsible for digital dermatitis. Also known as Mortellaro's disease, digital dermatitis is a bacterial infection that frequently affects dairy cows. It manifests itself as lesions, mainly on the crown (upper part of the hoof). Bacteria of the genus Treponema are the main pathogens responsible for Mortellaro disease. Contagious, this disease is transmitted by direct contact between animals, particularly in traffic corridors. Lesions usually begin as small abrasions, progressing to deeper ulcers. Consequences and prevention of digital dermatitis

Like all foot pathologies, dermatitis has consequences for cow well-being and milk production. Lesions are often painful, leading to lameness that limits animal mobility. A source of stress, they are also a gateway to other infections. There are many causes, often interacting with each other. A dirty, damp environment encourages the development of pathogens. When they stagnate, dejecta irritate the skin of the feet and create an environment conducive to infection. A floor that's too smooth, such as concrete, can cause slips and micro-lesions, making it easier for bacteria to penetrate. Abrasion and the presence of stones can also injure animals.

]]> Cows' hooves are anatomically designed for walking on soft ground. In most livestock buildings, cows have to walk and, above all, stand on hard floors such as concrete and slatted floors. This leads to changes in horn production, chronic inflammation and healing difficulties. They are often too abrasive, causing excessive wear of the horn, with the risk of having soles that are too thin and therefore more susceptible to ulcers and foot pathologies. Repetitive traumas such as these can lead to foot injuries and joint dysfunction, resulting in lameness. A cow with sore feet and legs will move less to eat and drink, and her production will be reduced. Her health and reproduction will also suffer. In fact, lameness increases the risk of early culling by a factor of 5.

Soft floors bring comfort and longevity to cows

On the contrary, with a soft floor, the contact area between the hooves and the ground will be greater. This means better weight distribution and, on average, 40% less pressure. This suppleness can be achieved by adding rubber mats, such as Magellan carpet.

Professor Mulling, from the University of Leipzig, has demonstrated that with a soft rug such as Magellan, a larger contact area at hoof level results in better weight distribution, more bearable joint pressure, a more stable position for the animal and a lower risk of foot and joint damage.

Taking care of their comfort and the good health of their feet is the key to ensuring that their lactation gets off to the best possible start.

With their feet preserved and their joints less fatigued, cows will be in the best of health and will express their dairy potential to the full.

Cleaner feet with Magellan carpet

For dairy cows, foot cleanliness is an essential factor in their health. Dirt and dampness encourage the development of foot diseases and increase the risk of lameness. A cow with sore feet is less likely to move and eat, which is detrimental to her health and production. Often, foot problems and lameness open the door to other pathological or reproductive problems, due to a compromised immune status.

To be sure a foot is clean, simply check that the horn is clearly visible. On the dorsal side, the thick crust should never extend beyond the hairline. On the palmar side, the accessory hooves should remain clean. There should be no crust under the hoof.

More cleanliness, fewer slips

If soft floors are recommended for the comfort of feet and the safety of movement they provide, what about their impact on hygiene? To assess the impact of rubber mats on foot cleanliness, the Institut de l'Elevage conducted a study on three equipped farms in the Manche and Ille et Vilaine regions of France. These results were compared with those of the SOLVL study. This study assessed the sanitary, environmental and economic impact of different types of floor in dairy cow buildings, and drew up recommendations on the choice, renovation and maintenance of floors.

The results of the SOLVL project confirm that feet tend to be dirtier on carpets in slurry management than on other types of floor, with 27.4% of dorsal surfaces and 35.6% of palmar surfaces very dirty, whereas it is recommended to be less than 10%. This can be explained in part by poorly adapted floor maintenance for carpets (lack of scraping, change in scraping frequency). For the 87 farms evaluated in the SOLVL study, the result was that slatted floors gave cleaner feet, with solid floors in manure management receiving the lowest scores.

« For our study, we assessed the degree of soiling of several areas of the body on three farms, equipped with Magellan mats. Foot cleanliness was better than the references in the SOLVL study, says Alice Elvinger, who was in charge of animal health studies at the Institut de l'Elevage. The percentage of clean feet was higher than with standard rugs. This cleanliness of the feet is beneficial to the health of the legs. In these three farms, over 45% of the animals had good legs, which limited the onset of lameness. None of the three farms equipped with Magellan mats exceeded the alert threshold of 30% of cows suffering from lameness. ».

This is due to the presence of slopes and drainage channels on the Magellan mat, which facilitate effluent elimination. The soil is therefore drier. Cows' feet have less contact with effluent. To combine the walking comfort of rubber mats with the cleanliness of the feet, the key to success is regular, effective cleaning. The study showed that the most effective cleaning is to have the scraper pass every 2 hours, or even every 1.5 hours. The scraper must also have been adapted for carpets, with the addition of rubber fingers. In areas where the scraper is not used, you need to ensure sufficient manual cleaning, so that the cows don't get dirty in these areas.

Up to 60% of clean feet

In the three farms equipped with Magellan belts, the proportion of clean feet is higher than that observed in farms equipped with standard belts. The reference figure from the SOLVL study is 10% of clean dorsal feet. Two of the three farms had between 50 and 60% of clean dorsal feet, while the 3e presented 30%. After adjusting its scraper, one of the three farms even came close to having no very dirty feet.

]]> Improving soil quality to reduce lameness problems

Lameness is a fast-growing problem on dairy farms. Foot and leg problems have become the third most common pathology after mastitis and infertility. Foot health and production performance are linked in dairy cows. An animal with foot injuries or a limp will move less to eat and drink. Its immune status will be deficient. As a result, the cow won't fully express her production potential.

Players in the breeding world are mobilizing to contain lameness problems, with, among other things, the development of preventive trimming and the inclusion of foot health in breeding stock indexing. Thus, since 2014 and the launch of the Génosanté program, breeding organizations have included health indexes in their criteria for choosing future breeding stock. These genetic health indexes combine information on the risk of acetonemia, reproduction, udder health and foot health. Their aim is to propose more resistant breeding stock to improve the health of cows and thus enhance their technical and economic performance. The foot health index is based on seven diseases: infectious diseases (interdigital dermatitis, slug, fourchet) and non-infectious diseases (diffuse bleeding, circumscribed bleeding, opening of the white line, sole ulcer).

A better description of foot injuries to combat them more effectively

Genomics enables us to select the most interesting breeding stock by reading their genome. When we add a new criterion, such as foot health, we need to make the link between the genome and the expression of this trait. This is what has been done through Parabov, a scientific project initiated and financed by France Génétique Elevage, which has made it possible to draw up a reference system for collecting foot lesion data. Carried out on 1,2458 cattle, this survey of foot lesions has a dual purpose: to provide breeders with a lesion assessment of their herd (listing the number and type of lesions to know what to prioritize for action), and to collect information for selection purposes by making the link between phenotype - in this case, foot problems - and animal genotyping.

Evaluating the impact of a soil change

For animals that spend most of their time in buildings, the type of floor and the risk of lesions are linked. In a straw-covered area, there will be more bleeding and cherry blight. In a system of cubicles and slurry, there will be more problems with digitis dermatitis. To assess the benefits of a change of floor, lesions on the forequarters and hindquarters of 141 cows were analyzed using the Parabov methodology. Between the two parages used to observe these lesions, a number of Magellan carpet were installed in the traffic lane. On second trimming, 80% of lesions were found to have healed, but 8.6% had worsened. More specifically, 80% of the lesions were healing due to digitis dermatitis or Mortellaro's disease. The presence of lesions due to Mortellaro's disease increased from 30 to 18%. The number of diffuse bleime lesions fell from 30% to 15%.

With a draining rubber mat, such as Magellan carpet, As a result, excrement is more easily evacuated. Dry, clean hooves are less likely to develop disease. What's more, the grooves facilitate the removal of small stones, which are thrown up in the excrement. These stones can cause wounds on the sole. Wounds which, although small, are a gateway for germs.

What if dairy productivity was also a question of soil?

When you consider that the leading cause of culling of dairy cows in France is related to leg problems, the farmer's gaze should immediately turn to the stall floor. 

In fact, the risk of infection is never far from the barn floor, which can be a veritable breeding ground for bacteria, conducive to the appearance of panaritis or other digitis dermatitis. But it's above all the hardness of the floors in the corridors and concrete cubicles that is to blame. Unsuited to the physiology of cows' feet, they weaken the feet of dairy cows, making them more susceptible to bacterial attack, and then, through a domino effect, impacting on the productivity of the workshop.

And what if contributing to the well-being of cows meant reconsidering the quality of stabling surfaces?

Flexible flooring for healthy cow feet

Cows spend 8 to 12 hours a day on their feet. Simply placing their feet on a hard cement or asphalt floor causes shocks to the joints and consequent abrasion of the hooves. Repeated impact can lead to abnormal horn growth and the appearance of bony outgrowths responsible for chronic, often irreversible lameness. These traumas are even more pronounced in primiparous animals, which lack the genetic capacity to produce foot pads.

On hard soils, the slightest pebble can trigger foot pathology in dairy cows. The 5 fundamental freedoms of animal welfare

Since the law of July 10, 1976, which defines the animal «as a sentient being that must be placed in conditions compatible with the biological imperatives of its species», well-being has encompassed five fundamental freedoms, to which every animal must have access:

  • Freedom from hunger and thirst, thanks to free access to fresh water and a suitable diet; ;
  • Avoid discomfort by providing an appropriate environment, including shelter and comfortable rest areas; ;
  • Be free from pain, injury and disease; the animal must not be mistreated in a way that could cause it pain or injury, and must be treated in the event of illness; ;

Soil quality and prevention of lameness
