Concrete floors in traffic corridors, often damp and slippery, are an ideal breeding ground for the bacteria responsible for digital dermatitis. Designed by Bioret Agri, Magellan is a draining, non-slip coating. Its grooved structure ensures a healthy environment, considerably reducing the risk of foot pathologies.
Also known as Mortellaro's disease, digital dermatitis is a bacterial infection that frequently affects dairy cows. It manifests itself as lesions, mainly on the crown (upper part of the hoof). Bacteria of the Treponema genus are the main pathogens responsible for Mortellaro's disease. Contagious, the disease is transmitted by direct contact between animals, especially in traffic lanes. Lesions usually begin as small abrasions, progressing to deeper ulcers. These lesions may crust over, leading to more or less severe lameness. The "cherry" is a specific lesion linked to dermatitis, caused by the complication of a sole ulcer.
Consequences and prevention of digital dermatitis
Like all foot pathologies, dermatitis has consequences for cow well-being and milk production. Lesions are often painful, leading to lameness that limits animal mobility. A source of stress, they are also a gateway to other infections. There are many causes, often interacting with each other. A dirty, damp environment encourages the development of pathogens. When they stagnate, dejecta irritate the skin of the feet and create an environment conducive to infection. A floor that's too smooth, such as concrete, can cause slips and micro-lesions, making it easier for bacteria to penetrate. Abrasion and the presence of stones can also injure animals.
Magellan : the solution for a healthy, non-slip floor
Dermatitis problems can be significantly reduced by installing appropriate flooring. Bioret Agri, a specialist in innovation, animal welfare and support for livestock farmers, has designed flooring that reproduces the natural conditions appreciated by cows, for maximum cushioning, drainage and grip. Called Magellan, this rubber roll can be unrolled over long lengths without any joins, and features grooves specifically adapted to the hooves. Its ribbed, non-slip structure rapidly drains dejecta, limiting the proliferation of bacteria and therefore the risk of foot pathologies. Magellan is the ideal solution for breeders faced with dermatitis and lameness problems.
Tailor-made coatings for all dairy farms
Magellan is available in two thicknesses: 16 mm (guaranteed for 10 years)* and 25 mm (guaranteed for 15 years)*. This innovative covering can be installed in traffic corridors, waiting areas, milking parlors or in front of the robot. It is compatible with all types of cleaning equipment, whether automatic, robotized or tractor-mounted. Cleaning and maintenance are easy. Whether with a straight or semi-straight scraper, it requires virtually no adaptation. Thanks to the Magellan, hooves are always above the juices and remain healthy. Cows can move with confidence, while keeping their feet dry at all times.
