Concrete floors in traffic lanes, often damp and slippery, are ideal for the development of bacteria responsible for digital dermatitis. Designed by Bioret Agri, Magellan is a draining and non-slip flooring solution. Its grooved structure ensures a healthy environment, significantly reducing the risk of foot pathologies.
Also known as “Mortellaro's disease,” digital dermatitis is a bacterial infection that frequently affects dairy cows. It manifests as lesions, mainly at the coronary band (upper part of the hoof). Bacteria of the genus Treponema are the main pathogens responsible for Mortellaro's disease. Contagious, this condition is transmitted by direct contact between animals, especially in traffic lanes. Lesions usually start as small abrasions that develop into deeper ulcers. These lesions can become covered with scabs and lead to lameness of varying severity. The “cherry” is a specific lesion related to dermatitis, caused by the complication of a sole ulcer.
Consequences and prevention of digital dermatitis
Like all foot pathologies, dermatitis leads to consequences on the welfare of cows and milk production. The lesions are often painful, causing lameness that limits the mobility of the animals. As sources of stress, they are also entry points for other infections. The causes are multiple and often interact with each other. A dirty and humid environment promotes the development of pathogens. When excrement stagnates, it irritates the skin of the feet and creates an environment conducive to infections. A floor that is too smooth, such as concrete, can cause slips and micro-lesions, facilitating the penetration of bacteria. Abrasion and the presence of stones can also injure the animals.
Magellan: the solution for a healthy and non-slip floor
Dermatitis problems can be significantly limited by the installation of appropriate flooring. As a specialist in innovation, animal welfare and support for farmers, Bioret Agri has designed flooring that reproduces the natural conditions appreciated by cows, for maximum cushioning, drainage and grip. Named Magellan, this rubber roll, which can be unrolled over long lengths without any joints, has grooves specifically adapted to hooves. Its ribbed and non-slip structure quickly drains excrement, limiting the proliferation of bacteria and therefore the risk of foot pathologies. Magellan is the ally of the farmer facing problems of dermatitis and lameness.
A custom-made coating for all dairy farms
Usable on all farms, even with sand bedded stalls, Magellan is available in two thicknesses: 16 mm (10-year warranty)* and 25 mm (15-year warranty)*. This innovative coating can be installed in traffic lanes, waiting areas, milking parlors or in front of robots. It is compatible with all types of cleaning, whether automatic, robotic or tractor-based. Cleaning and maintenance are easy. Whether with a straight or semi-straight scraper, it requires practically no adaptation. Thanks to Magellan, the hooves are always above the liquids and remain healthy. Cows can move with confidence while constantly keeping their feet dry.
